The pentatonic scale is very useful and can give your playing a <strong>very interesting color.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NtRsdkrKALc?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Pentatonic scales are <strong>five-note scales:<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">For example, C major: <strong>C-D-E-G-A<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The relative minor sound is A minor, which has the same notes:<strong>A-C-D-E-G<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">To improvise on the pentatonic scale in a given key, it is enough to first <strong>use the pentatonic scale corresponding to the chord.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">For example, in G minor, I can use the G minor pentatonic: <strong>G-Bb-C-D-F<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Pour G major, it will be: <strong>G-A-C-D-F<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Play around with improvisation by only using the notes of the pentatonic scale but <strong>changing the order of the notes!<\/strong> This way you can get interesting patterns for improvisation! Obviously, we will use the whole register of the violin, from the lowest to the highest notes, and thus the spectrum is quite wide!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Technique for improvising with the pentatonic<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">To acquire more agility and freedom to improvise on this scale, it is necessary to <strong>work it in all directions to really get the feel of it in your fingers.<\/strong>..<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Here are some exercises to practice the pentatonic scale:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Play the scale and practice it in order, at different speeds<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">with jumps: a one note jump up, then joint note down<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">In groups of three notes going up and down<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">By group of 4 notes going up and down<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">You will find the <strong> score of these exercises <\/strong> on the summary sheet to download below!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Work on these exercises in all keys!<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">This gives you a lot of freedom and <strong>ease to improvise on all the pieces<\/strong>, on any chord! You will be able to cope with all situations, for example<strong> improvising in a difficult key<\/strong> (D-flat&#8230;E-flat..etc&#8230;)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">You can often <strong>stay on the pentatonic key of the piece throughout the piece<\/strong>, even on chord changes, for example to improvise on a <strong>blues<\/strong>. But be careful, even if the pentatonic can save some situations, you still need to <strong>know the chords of a piece<\/strong>, it doesn&#8217;t work all the time&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3>Why is the pentatonic effect so successful?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The effect of improvisation with the pentatonic is guaranteed, because by using it <strong>one systematically avoids playing joint notes<\/strong > like when improvising on a 7-note scale.
